Definition of the word 'cult'

This matter is of some importance because the Mormon organisation has been desperate to gain respectability and to throw off its weird image. Mormon missionaries throughout the world have been trained to try and deflect the charge often levelled against them that they belong to a cult. Of course, an organisation which has vast and almost unlimited financial resources is capable in the modern world to repackage itself and to present a certain acceptable image. Sadly, in the twenty-first century, image is more important than the criteria of objective biblical truth.

Despite the very best efforts of the LDS to appear attractive, from an evangelical perspective – and even from an informed secular perspective – there is no doubt that Mormonism can be classified as being a cult. No other conclusion can be drawn because of its heretical and bizarre belief system, its exclusivity (it claims to be the only true church on the face of the earth) and the extraordinary coercive control that its leadership has over its members.

Following are some dictionary definitions:

¨ an unorthodox or false religion; a great, often excessive, admiration for a person or idea – Chambers Dictionary
¨ a quasi-religious organisation using devious psychological techniques to gain and control adherents – Collins Dictionary
¨ a social group having an exclusive ideology and ritual practices centred on sacred symbols – Collins Dictionary
¨ a small religious group regarded as strange or as imposing excessive control over its members – The Compact Oxford Dictionary
¨ a religion regarded as unorthodox or spurious – Penguin Dictionary
¨ a religion or religious sect considered to be extremist or false, with its followers often living in an unconventional manner under the guidance of an authoritarian charismatic leader – Dictionary.com
¨ an exclusive group of persons sharing an esoteric, usually artistic or intellectual interest – Dictionary.com
¨ a quasi-religious organisation using devious psychological techniques to gain and control adherents – Collins English Dictionary
¨ a small group of people who have extreme religious beliefs who are not part of any established religion; thus: “Their son ran away and joined a cult.” – Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary
¨ a religion regarded as unorthodox or spurious – Penguin Reference Dictionary
¨ a religious group especially one with  beliefs that most people find strange and dangerous – Macmillan’s English Dictionary
Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. Romans 5:1
